The birth of Vasudeva

It was the year 1238. The place was a tiny hamlet known as ‘Paje’ (now known as Pajaka or Pajaka Kshetra), coming under the administrative limits of ‘Belle’.

4338 years had passed since the beginning of Kali Yuga. The exact Panchanga on that day was Vilambi Samvatsara, Ashwayuja Masa, Shukla Paksha, (Vijaya) Dashami Tithi.

Sri Madhva was born to Sri Narayana Nadillaya Bhatta and Vedavathi. His father is also referred to as ‘Madhya Geha’ Bhatta. Madhya Geha means ‘One from the middle house’ which is a Sanskritized version of Nadillaya (a Tulu word).

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT ACHARYA WAS BORN IN AN ORDINARY FAMILY OF A SCHOLAR AND A PIOUS MAN. HE DID NOT FAVOUR HIS FATHER OR MOTHER THOUGH HE COULD HAVE DONE IT. IN FACTTHE HOUSE OF NADILLAYA BHATTA WAS BURNT IN A FIRE HAVOC AFTER HIS DEATH AND VASUDEVA’S YOUNGER BROTHER CAME TO MADHVA SEEKING SANNYASA DEEKSHAA. SUCH IS ACHARYA’S VAIRAGYA.
