LORD rAma performed the ashwamedha yajna. LORD rAma then sent bharata to gandharvapura and got three crore asuras killed.

LORD then listened to the request of rudra and assured him of HIS return to shwEta dweepa. He satisifed the demands of sage dUrvAsa and fed him extremely satisfying bhOjana.

LORD rAma made HIS sons i.e. lava and kusha as the head of the Kingdom and headed north to HIS abode i.e shwEta dweepa. There HE was surrounded by shrI and hrI forms of mahAlakshmi on two sides and were fanning him with chAmara.

Lord hanUmAn was holding the white umbrella for the LORD while brahma, rudra and other dEvatas were singing praises of the LORD, who was resting in joy.

May such a LORD always protect me!

Notes:

– LORD rAma got sugreeva and all other kapees and other Kings to ayOdhya and performed the ashwamEdha yaaga for one year.
– The 3 crore asuras were actually gandharva-putras and were known as shailooShas. The king of kaikeya desha sent a request to the LORD through a person called girisEna for protection from these demons. LORD got them killed through bharata.
– In order to request HIS return, the devatas requested rudra to speak to LORD rAma.
– Around the same time, rudra, in his other form as sage dUrvAsa came to rAma’s abode. He demanded that he needs fresh food that is already ready (stale food won’t do, and he can’t wait for food to be cooked). LORD just extended HIS hand and produced a huge variety of fresh food and fed the sage to his satisfaction.
– Lava was the avatara of Indra; Kusha was the avatara of agni

Meaning
========

LORD rAma ruled the earth, that turned abundant in all aspects, and protected one and all. HE was always praised by sage agastya and other Rushis for doing so.

LORD rAma granted his own necklace to hanUmAn and accorded him appropriate status. HE then sent sugreeva and others to their respective kingdoms, so they could rule them. HE appointed bharata as the crown-prince, and lakshmaNa as in-charge for taking care of the cities and village folk.

One day a dog approached the LORD and told HIM that a sanyasi had hit it badly. LORD gave the responsibility of managing a temple to the sanyasi. HE then sent shatrughna and got the evil lavaNAsura killed.

LORD then killed an evil shUdra called shambooka and saved a brahmaNa child that was dead due to the evil shUdra.

When sage agastya gave HIM the garland that was originally from Lord brahma, LORD rAma accepted the same with great joy.

May such a LORD always protect us!

Notes:

– LORD granted hanUman his own personal necklace. HE also granted him the post of chaturmukha brahma in the next kalpa.
– LORD listened to the agony of the dog and decided to punish the bhikShu who had hit the dog. LORD made the bhikShu as in-charge of a temple called kAlAnjala. This incident highlights the risks of managing a temple because the bhikShu was sure to commit many mistakes and accumulate sin as in-charge of the temple, and consequently would suffer in the subsequent births!
– There was an asura by name jangha. He was performing tapas staying upside down, in the form of a shUdra, in order to obtain the post of rudra. LORD therefore killed this shUdra.
– rayaru is never one to spend an extra word on anything that is unnecessary. Still, he chose to add an adjective to the word “shUdra” and called him “duShTa”. This is to highlight the fact that LORD killed the shUdra only because he was an evil asura, and the killing was not because he was a shUdra.
– Once , there was a King called shweta. He was performing a yajna. Sage agastya came there and asked for food. At that time, the King handed over a garland given to him by Lord brahma, and requested that the same be put on LORD rAma at an appropriate time. It was this very garland that sage agastya, after receiving aathithya of LORD, put on HIM. If the King had directly put the garland on LORD, the puNya accumulated by him would have far exceeded his yogyata. Hence he requested that the sage put it on his behalf.
– lavaNAsura was the son of the ancient demon named madhu. He was living in madhuvana and was a trouble for all sajjanas. Hence LORD got him annihilated through HIS brother shatrughNa. After killed him, shatrughna built the city of mathura at that place.

Meaning

LORD rAma destroyed all the remaining rAkshasas, and then killed the ten-headed rAvaNa also. Lord brahma and other dEvatas, who became very pleased with this, showered paramAtma with flowers.

LORD then made the seetakRuti enter the agni, and through the agni, received HIS very own mahalakshmi, as seeta dEvi. HE then made vibhIshaNa, his devotee, as the King of the rAkshasas.

The LORD then climbed the puShpaka vimAna, along with all of HIS own people, and reached HIS city ayOdhya. HE was then crowned as the emperor of the land by HIS own people (led by rushi vashishTa and others).

LORD rAma then gave the best of gifts and maryaada to all HIS people and lived happily.

May such a LORD always grant all my desires!

Notes:

– The sEva done by everyone else in the war was miniscule compared to the number of rAkshasas killed by LORD rAma. rAvaNa at the last stage invokes his moola baLa and there are crores and crores of rAvaNas who appear. LORD rAma, due to HIS achintya adbhuta shakti, appears in as many rUpas in the battlefield and kills all of them.
– When the seetakRuti enters agni, the original seeta dEvi returns from kailasa and unites (merely for the eyes of others) with rAma.
– The puShpaka viMana had a speciality that it could accommodate any number of people. There was no limit to how many could find a place in it!
– LORD rAma then became king of ayOdhya and ruled the entire world for 11,000 years!!!

Meaning
========

LORD rAma engaged with rAvaNa, who came to battle, and defeated him thoroughly. rAvaNa then sent his brother kumbhakarna to battle, whom LORD rAma very easily defeated and killed.

Indrajit, the son of rAvaNa, then waged war and tied up all the kapees with his naaga paasha. Garuda then appeared there and freed all the kapees from the naaga paasha and earned the pleasure of LORD.

LORD then gave hanUmAn the opportunity to do seva by allowing him to bring the gandhamadana mountain, and using herbs from that mountain, brought back all the kapees to life.

Indrajit tied up the kapees a third time with the naaga paasha. LORD rAma then freed them up with the vijnAna astra. He then asked lakshmaNa to wage battle with Indrajit and got him killed.

May such a LORD protect us!

Notes:

– Since garuDa does not take avatara on earth, he got his opportunity to perform rAma sEva by appearing on the skies of the battle field and freeing the kapees from the paasha that Indrajit had tied them with.
– Lord hanUmAn actually brings the gandhamadana mountain on two occasions. On both occasions, herbs from the mountain are used by the kapi called suShEna, who is a doctor, and all the kapees are brought back to life
– The rescue and life-giving to all kapees by LORD rAma through the use of vijnAna astra just proves that the acts by garuDa and hanUmAn are only to give them an opportunity to perform sEva. Otherwise, it is well known that the LORD does not need any one’s help to protect his devotees!

HE then listened to the pleasing words of hanUmAn, the one with a radiant face and left towards lankA along with the innumerable army of the kapees, such as sugreeva and others.

When vibhIshaNa, the younger brother of rAvaNa, came in surrender of the LORD, HE gracefully accepted him and treated him very well. Thereafter, HE listened to the prayers of varuNa, the Lord of the oceans, and got a bridge built through the kapees.

HE then entered the town of the enemy, the city of lankA, and got the enemies killed through the kapees.

May such a LORD rAma always protect us!

Notes:

– Sugreeva forgets his promise and duty towards LORD rAma during the rainy season. LORD sends lakshmaNa to remind sugreeva. At the same time, Lord hanUmAn also reminds sugreeva of his duty and wakes him up.
– rayaru sums up the entire achievement of hanUmAn in just a couple of words by stating that the words of hanUmAn that he spoke when he came back were very pleasing (samanushrutya) to LORD. This highlights the end result of sundara kAnDa
– The entire episode of LORD waiting for the Ocean to make way, subsequently acting as if HE was upset, and then making varuNa appear in front with folded hands is also summed up in just a few words. varuNa surrenders completely and prays to the LORD to build a bridge so that HIS own keerti increases even further.
– rayaru also indicates that the LORD got the enemies killed by the monkeys even though HE singlehandedly could have destroyed all of them. It is a sadhana opportunity for the dEvatas who had taken avatara as monkeys to serve the LORD!

LORD rAma then listened to the words of hanumanta and accepted the friendship of sugreeva. He then pierced and killed 7 daityas who were in the form of 7 tAla trees and were strong due to the boon of Lord Brahma.
After that, LORD killed vAli and established sugreeva, the son of sUrya, as the King (of kiShkinda). The LORD then stayed in the cave of mAlyavanta mountain.
May such a LORD rAma protect us!

Notes:

Shabari was actually an apsara who had been cursed by shachi dEvi for having shown her pomp and attitude in front of Indra.
LORD rAma destroyed 7 daityas with a single arrow by piercing the 7 palm trees in which they were staying.
Once sugreeva became King, the rainy season started. Therefore, LORD rAma waited for the appropriate season to arrive for the search, by staying in a cave in mAlyavat mountain

mAreecha then took the form of a golden deer and the incident led to rAvaNa kidnapping the pratikruti of seetA dEvi.

LORD then started searching for (the pratikruti of) seetA dEvi, and provided nija gati to the wounded vulture jaTAyu. HE then killed a rakshasa by name kabandha.

May such a LORD always protect me!

Notes:

  • Once in a war, an arrow that rAvaNa released accidentally killed the husband of shUrpanakhi. When shUrpanakhi demanded some resolution to her difficulty of having lost her husband, rAvaNa directed her to search any other male and promised that he would get her married. Due to this, she came to panchavaTi, in search of a husband.
  • The rakshasa kabandha was actually a gandharva by name “sevaka naada”. He got relieved from the rakshasa body when LORD killed him
  • When rAvaNa kidnapped the seeta pratikruti, the actual seetadEvi went away to kailasa and was worshipped there by rudra and pArvati

Meaning

LORD rAma gave his footwear to HIS brother bharata and sent him with the responsibility of protecting the earth (ruling the Kingdom). HE then destroyed the asura who was residing in the eyes of the crow.

HE then left chitrakooTa and met Rushi Atri and was worshipped by him. From there he proceeded to daNDaka forest. There, he granted the wishes of Sage sharabhanga and he reached his desired (deserved) lOka.

LORD rAma then destroyed the asura by name virAdha. A whole group of Rushis met the LORD and requested HIM to destroy the entire group of asuras (led by rAvaNa). LORD rAma blessed them and assured them of the destruction of the asuras.

HE then received, from sage agastya, various weapons such as a sword, bow, quivers of arrows (that never exhausted) all of which were given by Indra to the sage (in order to hand over to the LORD).

May such a LORD always protect us!

Notes:

The crow was actually Jayanta, the son of Indra, with the Avesha of a asura called turaNga. LORD killed the asura by doing abhimantrana to a blade of grass and shooting it at the crow
Sage sharabhanga prayed to LORD and as per permission of the LORD, entered a fire and gave up his body. HE reached paramapada
The asura virAdha was actually a gandharva by name tumburu. He enjoyed the pleasure of urvashi, which enraged kubEra and therefore got cursed to be born as an asura. When LORD killed virAdha, tumburu got freed and went back to his original abode
The quiver that sage agastya gave the LORD was one which never got emptied of arrows. It was an “akshaya” quiver

Meaning

========

In order to please Queen Kaikeyi (her wish), Lord rAma, along with his brother and wife, put on robes made of tree barks, and went to the forest. HE, the ONE who put on a beautiful jaTa, then crossed the gangA, having been worshipped by guha.

HE was then worshipped by sage bharadhwaja, the son of bruhaspati. HE then crossed the river yamuna, and reached the clean and peaceful place called chitrakUTa.

LORD rAma then got to know the news of the death of HIS father when his brother bharata came there along with HIS mother and others. HE consoled HIS brother and gave tarpaNa as HIS dharma towards the departed soul.

May such a LORD always protect us!

Notes: (self attempt)

  • By stating that it was LORD rAma who consoled bharata, even though he just got the news, rayaru shows how LORD is unattached and unaffected by anything in samsAra
  • The mention of ganga, yamuna, beautiful chitrakUta and meeting of sages like bharadhwaja is to highlight the point that LORD did not suffer in any which way during the stay in the forest
